Zhui Ning Chang

Zhui Ning Chang is a Malaysian editor, writer, researcher, and theatre maker based in London, UK. They serve as Editor-in-Chief at award-winning khōréō magazine, and are a co-editor on the anthology Best of Malaysian Short Fiction in English 2010-2020 (Malaysian Writers Society). Their writing for performance includes queer romcom Seashore Yuanfen and time travel project Asian Pirate Musical; their reviews and essays have appeared in Strange Horizons, The BSFA Review, Library Journal, Fantasy/Animation, and more. Currently, Zhui Ning is a PhD researcher in Southeast Asian speculative fiction at Birkbeck, University of London.

Although SFF written and translated into English is growing in diversity and prominence, there are still rich worlds of SFF that are beyond the Anglocentric markets of North America and the UK. What narratives and structures do these international writing communities use? What do their publishing landscapes look like, and what relationships do they have with the Anglophone world? How do writers from “the rest of the world” negotiate their careers between their local literary landscapes and the dominance of Anglocentric publishing?
