Writing and Publishing Beyond the English-Speaking World

June 9, 2024 9:00 am to 11:00 am

Although SFF written and translated into English is growing in diversity and prominence, there are still rich worlds of SFF that are beyond the Anglocentric markets of North America and the UK. What narratives and structures do these international writing communities use? What do their publishing landscapes look like, and what relationships do they have with the Anglophone world? How do writers from “the rest of the world” negotiate their careers between their local literary landscapes and the dominance of Anglocentric publishing?

Is This a Golden Age of Queer & Trans SF/F?

June 8, 2024 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm

Panelists: Charlie Jane Anders, Zabé Ellor, Cecilia Tan (moderator) and LP Kindred
Publishing Trends. At a recent LGBTQ+ meetup at an SFF convention, the attendees made a list of their favorite recent queer SFF books, webcomics, and shows, and after an hour, the list was still growing. Even as books are getting banned, and anti-trans and homophobic legislation is on the rise in the USA (and elsewhere), an explosion is happening within our genre — and from the major publishers! Thirty years ago you could list every queer SFF book in a single 200-page book. Now, that number is published every year in indie publishing, with scads of new titles coming from major imprints as well. Books like Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan, and even Chuck Tingle’s Camp Damascus span styles and themes and genres. How did we get here and how do we keep it going?

The Nexus Between Science Fiction and the Natural World

June 8, 2024 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm

This panel will discuss the nexus between science fiction and nature writing, and how science fiction and fantasy writers can explore earth’s own rich environment—while also telling readers more about where they live and the challenges facing our planet.

So many of us think of science fiction as occurring in space, in faraway galaxies, or on fantastical worlds. Or the stories are set on earth in scientific or magical environments in the present or future where discoveries or characters spin out of control, whether it’s “Frankenstein,” “I, Robot,” or even Harry Potter.

But another rich world exists here on earth, and it hasn’t been as nearly well explored. It’s the natural world, whether it’s the ocean, tropical islands, the planet’s core, jungles, and more.

June 8, 2024 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm

SFF has a long history of using fantastical allegories and metaphors to talk about contemporary issues. From transformation stories that mirror the trans experience, to fantasy racism, what are the benefits and pitfalls of the use of allegory? Where do authors land on subtlety vs being on the nose?
